Decorative Fences for New York City by Hal MajorStyles can run all the way from the utilitarian chainlink to the elegant and regal look of wrought iron fence that mimic the classic Victorian fences.Small yards A small yard with very little space poses a special challenge for decorative fencing. The fencing needs to provide the desired protection and appealing look without overwhelming the yard or patio. Keeping the fence to the shortest possible height reduces the possibility of the fence overpowering the looks of the yard. The more light the fence allows through can improve the appearance without comprising security for your pets. Picket style fences and low wrought iron fences are excellent choices for smaller spaces in the city. Wood Fences If you are a fan of all things natural then a wood fence might be your first choice. Nothing compares to the beauty and elegance of natural wood. You want to be certain that the fence is constructed of weather and insect resistant wood. The most popular woods for fencing are redwood, cedar, pressure treated pine and a newcomer to the U.S. called Ipe. All of these woods will provide years of lasting beauty with a minimum of annual maintenance. Vinyl Fencing Vinyl fencing is a great option for folks like me that are into low or no maintenance products. It’s made to look like wood and comes in variety of colors and styles. Installing vinyl fencing requires the same methods and tools as all fencing. Therefore, there are no labor saving aspects to that part. Vinyl fencing comes in all different price ranges. If you’re going to be staying in your home for a few years or more you’ll want to go with a high quality fence. These usually don’t come pre-assembled like the cheaper grade fences. The posts should have heavy metal bases and the fence parts snap together like Lego's. Wrought Iron Wrought iron fencing was the choice for high-end Victorian homes and you can still see many of the fences still standing today. It’s still high-end today and even reclaimed wrought iron fencing brings a good price. However, if you’re looking for a very long lasting and low maintenance fencing option, wrought iron is the way to go. Wrought iron provides excellent security because of its strength and pointed cap designs. Privacy is another issue and these fences do not provide any privacy. However, they do allow cool summer breezes blow through. PVC Fencing What’s the difference between PVC fencing and vinyl fencing? PVC is one of many plastics or vinyls used to make vinyl fencing. PVC is the compound that many sewer and storm drainage systems are made from and it is a tougher than some of the less expensive vinyl fence materials. Recent innovations in UV protectors and impact inhibitors make PVC fencing an excellent long-term low cost option. Although the fence material looks flimsy and thin it actually has five times the strength and four times the flexibility of wood. Privacy Fencing Privacy fencing describes it function and not the material of the fence. A fence constructed so you can’t see through it is considered a privacy fence. Wood is the most popular material for privacy fences. The fence stiles are butted together on the edges and fastened into place. Privacy fences are generally from six to ten feet tall to prevent prying eyes from looking over the top of the fence. If romantic evenings in the hot tub are your thing, privacy fencing is the answer. |
